Biosecurity and Its Effects in Poultry

Biosecurity creates hygienic conditions within the poultry house that minimise the effects of disease, optimise bird performance and welfare, and safeguard food safety. It is one of the most cost-effective tools available to a poultry operation — far cheaper than treating an outbreak after the fact.

A sound biosecurity programme is robust, mandatory, practical and cost-effective. It is properly resourced, built into staff training, and reviewed regularly rather than left to sit unchanged for years.

In practice, this means guarding against exposure through every route disease can travel: feed, litter, day-old chicks, rodents, equipment, water, insects, visiting people, and wild birds. Each of these is a potential entry point, and a gap in any one of them can undo strong practice everywhere else.

For farms scaling up production, biosecurity is not a one-time setup — it is a discipline that has to be maintained as flock size, staff turnover and visitor traffic all increase the number of ways disease can enter.
